SEO for Lazy People

If you're anything like me, you want your website to rank well... but you don't want to work very hard at it. More power to you.

It's actually a lot easier than you think. People write huge papers about search engine optimization (SEO) and spend tons of time trying to crack the Google code, when there isn't really any code to crack. You just need to do a few simple things:

  • Clean up your title tags. Make them clear, concise, and clickable. It worked for me. For more, here's how to make the best title tags possible.
  • Create content with links. Be generous. Share the love. Link out to things you want people to see. For example, here's a great site full of SEO knowledge.
  • Keyword your content. Pick the text you want people to type into Google to find you. Put those words into your copy like your life depends on it.
  • Link using content phrases. Instead of saying "click here," use content phrases such as "my weekly comic book reviews."
  • Share your site. Talk on message boards and link your site in your signature. Join MySpace, Facebook, and YouTube (you'll have fun and make friends).

I know what you're thinking: "It's not really that easy." Actually, it is. My advice will help you make a better website, and in turn, give you better usability, better traffic, and better rankings. There are things I left out, like link campaigns and social bookmarking. But those are way too much work if you're lazy.
